A good start to 2010

It’s only January 3rd and already I am having second thoughts about my New Years resolution not to play PLO. A close friend of mine and someone who I can trust with all things poker reckons that I must be out of my mind to ditch PLO this year. He reckons that I should be concentrating on this form of poker more than any other.

Speaking of poker, I have played two heads up sessions at NL200 and won a total of $388. It isn’t going to change my life but it is a way back after the bad end to 2009 that I had. Over the Christmas period I have been very idle and this is now starting to kick on into 2010. I keep telling myself that I will start proper on Monday but I seriously need to kick this latest idle trend.

Of course it is common knowledge that idle people don’t make good poker players because physical idleness and mental idleness are linked. I certainly think that too much poker writing has affected my mental state. I was afraid of this a couple of years ago when it became apparent that the writing was starting to take over from playing.

Still…..this year I am going to keep things nice and tight and no more getting above my head in games with no value! You simply have to treat the new breed of online poker players with more respect than that. But getting back to my decision not to play PLO in 2010 and I keep getting told that this is where the value is.

I don’t doubt it for a minute as this form of poker confuses players lower down the pecking order. I am not a great PLO player but my friend reckons that with a good rake deal that I could make $50/hour playing PLO100 six handed. I am not so sure about that as I know a couple of really strong PLO players who are struggling to make money at the $200 level these days.

Maybe he is confusing his PLO game with mine as mine is nowhere near the level of his as he has been making an average of $300/$400 a day at that game for the past year. Maybe I need to take a look at the game and really knuckle down to learn it but the problem is that by the time that I do this, everyone else will have done the same. This year I plan on hitting and running on numerous sites playing heads up and see how things go.

I also have a problem in that a couple of years ago I downloaded the software of all of the major sites (over 50) to check on player levels, software, game types etc and didn’t bother to open rakeback schemes. So I am now having to work around this problem but I have managed it. So all the best for 2010 and here’s hoping for a profitable hard working one!
