It’s a long time since I last won a poker tournament (unless it was an SNG) either live or online poker. But the feeling that Joe Cada must have had when he won the big one must have been something else. I don’t think that the adrenalin rush of going very deep in an event can be surpassed by cash games. This is despite the fact that cash games offer by far the best chance of success for the regular pro.
Today’s video shows Joe Cada winning the event while being watched from the press room with Phil Hellmuth being present. I think he will be a great ambassador for poker and being so young, Hellmuth may just have a point. How many young kids in the world will want to be the next Joe Cada?
Although there will be a serious flip side to this as well as I predict that legions of young kids will end up chasing fools gold. Joe Cada may just end up doing for poker both live and online what Moneymaker did in 2003. Actually this could be a shot in the arm for the game of poker but as with the way of the jungle, the vast majority of players who come into the game will suffer at the hands of the smaller percentage who prepare properly.
I quite liked this footage above and beyond the actual live footage taken from the playing hall itself but then again I must be mad because I have always liked Phil Hellmuth. Behind the spiel and the hype is one great poker player and very few people seem to recognise that fact. Many people will say that all his bracelets have been in hold ‘em, that he hasn’t won much in the new modern era and they may be right.
But Hellmuth has adapted and I think that even he knows that he isn’t the greatest hold ‘em player in the world. It is probably impossible to tell exactly who is but Hellmuth is up there with the best at live tournament no-limit hold ‘em.
