I got an e-mail from a guy last week asking me why I didnt talk more about blackjack on my site seeing as I used to play the game full-time. Well firstly while BJ still arouses me (not in that way), it is really rather a waste of time in the UK and my name is too well known anyway.
But he asked me what the art to card counting is……in four words…….GETTING AWAY WITH IT!! There is no art to actually counting cards, that can be done by anybody who is mentally agile enough to add and subtract in ones very quickly. Once you can quickly associate certain cards with a numerical value then you are well on your way.
In fact there are a few counts out there where you dont even have to do true count conversions as they are imbalanced counts. Counting systems like the KO count for example by Fuchs and Vancura dont need true count conversion. But it all counts for jack if you get caught or the casino logs on to how much money you are ahead. You not only need to spread your action, but also disguise getting the money on which is far more important. It is a failure to do this which foils a very high percentage of counters.
So how do you get away with it? Well firstly I dont want to divulge that and secondly it would take too long anyway. But the art to card counting isnt in being able to count…..a player can get to a very high level of proficiency in about three months……the rest is the subterfuge…..thats the art.
