Playing tournament poker part 2
The Dean can be contacted at Carl@Pokerquest.f9.co.uk for all poker, gambling and coaching related matters.
Yesterday I gave my quick over view of why I dont play tournament poker and how a player who basically did nothing wrong stood no chance of winning a particular tournament. It is the same with the main event at the WSOP, someone somewhere is going to luck it and amass a huge stack.
One only has to recall how fortunate Jamie Gold got in 2006 to win the main event. Darvin Moon who is the current chip leader going into the November final appears to have had similar luck. Of course there is nothing wrong with this but yet millions of players seem to resent people who get lucky.
This is like resenting lottery winners…….someone is going to win it every week whether it upsets you or not so you may as well live with it and wish them well. Can a bad player win the main event? It depends how you define bad and what your level of knowledge is.
There are many players out there who would define me as bad. Probably becasue my mathematical understanding of certain situations is less than theirs and there would be some justification for them thinking that. Mathematics isnt a huge part of my game although I dare say that there are a myraid of mathematical computations all interwoven into how I play and gets condensed into something called “experience” and “feel”.
Some of the analysis that I see some players do seems to be a work of art….. far beyond anything that I could do or even want to do. But not being able to demonstrate A level mathematical prowess doesnt mean that you cannot have a future in the game…..far from it.
Any shrewd poker player will identify their strengths and also more importantly their weaknesses and how that correlates with their opponents. There is skill in knowing how to make money in any gambling avenue. After 20 years in the trenches, I know how to make money and that doesnt mean that I need the knowledge of a Brian Townsend or a Phil Galfond to be able to get it……also comes down to how much money you want to get…..me…..well…..I aint greedy.
See you soon
