Someone asked me this in an e-mail recently and it is one of those things thats difficult to answer because much of it depends on the individual. But I certainly wouldnt recommend playing large MTT’s either online or live unless you have a very strong tournament style, are not afraid to gamble and you make sure that there is a financial overlay in the tournament that you are playing in.
If you want to play tournaments because you prefer them then pick and choose your tournaments. For instance, look for tournaments where there is a guaranteed prize pool. Then look what size field it has just prior to the off. If a cardroom or poker site is guaranteeing say $100,000 and a quick look about five minutes before the off reveals that there are only enough players to bring the pot to $70,000 then this means that even with the late entries, the cardroom or site will be stumping up an extra 20k.
Couple this with the dead money, presuming its not you and you can have a decent overlay in situations like these. But I prefer cash games but even then you have to be careful with game selection. I wont be able to answer everything in this post but do take what I have said about poker tournaments seriously. Hey……even freerolls have their value.
I know people who have built their bankrolls out of thin air playing these and Chris Ferguson did a very high profile challenge in which he turned $0 into $10,000 starting with freerolls. So it can be done but a freeroll has an overlay for EVERYONE!!!!
I would have a centralised bank account with Neteller or Moneybookers so this enables you to move money around easily. But the tournaments on Cake Poker are fantastic value in their own right and the new breed of sportsbook players that are joining that site are generating some great action these days.
I will be talking more about this in later posts but try to remember to pick and choose your poker tournaments the same as you do with your cash games.
