Its all about emotion

I was having a very interesting and productive discussion with my partner last night (thats my poker partner and not my real partner). I have been coming to the conclusion recently that I need a bigger edge in the games that I am playing in than I already have. I think that I have an edge but I dont think that its enough at the 25-50 level.

Years ago I could beat these games just on technical superiority……those days are gone. Now I have to find some value from weaker players and to be honest, at that level there are not many of them around. The ones who come into the games who provide good value dont hang around for long or they do their money and go.

I have been having some serious soul searching recently and I have indentified certain situations in which I dont play well. I am playing my “A” game 80% of the time and 20% of the time I am either playing mediocre or downright poorly. I now feel that I can eliminate the 20% just by doing different things that have nothing whatsoever to do with the playing of the hands.

But I am also going to watch the games far more as well and I want to know when players are playing beyond their peak or when they are tilting. I have figured that I cannot be on my own in this even at 25-50. I guess this is what Doyle Brunson actually meant when he said that you “just have to stay with certain players and they will eventually pass you money”.

I am sure that Doyle was referring to games far higher than 25-50 as well. If I cant get an edge technically then I will get an edge mentally and this is where it is all won and lost at these levels. So I will be doing things a little differently from next month and its about bloody time. My new Poker Office 5 software is really doing the business but its not enough at these levels. Many of the players games are so good that you cannot get an edge this way.

Should be an interesting March and see ya soon.
