I receieved an e-mail from someone who asked me what the best way to make money in poker is. I answered a similar question a while ago and one of the things that I forgot to mention in that reply was that you need to start thinking strategically and not tactically. What do I mean by that? Well it is all well and good analysing poker hands as a way forward but that has limitations simply because you can never guarantee that your tactical knowledge will be enough to get you an edge.
You must try and earn your money from other non tactical avenues. Like with tracking software for instance……it is common knowledge now that I use Poker Office 5 whenever I am not playing on Cake Poker. But using tracking software isnt a strategy and even if it is……it isnt an effective one much of the time if too many of your opponents are doing the same thing.
But yet playing on Cake Poker who dont allow Poker Office would be a strategy if your strategy was to get around the problem of players using databases and tracking software against you. Playing tighter and sacrificing EV deliberately to lower variance so that it makes it easier on you mentally to make money is a strategy. It is long term thinking that moves beyond merely looking at individual hands in a vacuum.
Playing poker with a strategy/plan is the way to go. Being able to do this means that you need to know your own particular level, how that correlates with that of your opponents and what other non tactical things you can implement as part of your strategy so that tactical issues are suddenly not as important as you once thought.
Suddenly thinking in this way makes you less tilty…..unless your names Carl Sampson trying to play NL50…..DO WHAT i SAY NOT AS I DO
See you soon
