Watched the football last night and despite us not playing well (never expected us to), I think we have a chance next year. Many people will think that I have taken leave of my senses but listen, if Greece can win Euro 2004 then we can win the World Cup.
Its a cup competition so some strange things can and will happen. It will also be played in a climate that will suit us for the first time in ages. We also have a manager who will not take prisoners and who really knows his football and is also a winner at the highest level. We also have the players…..make no mistake about that.
Anyone who doubts that we have the players only has to look at the Champions League, this is where the best football is played and at the higher levels of the big four leagues. But yet our players play CL football year in and year out. Ferdinand, Terry, Cole, Bridge, Lampard, J Cole, Gerrard, Carrick, Rooney, Hargreaves etc etc. Then people like Johnson and Crouch have stepped up to the mark lately.
The talent in the England team is outstanding but we do drift in games and I think that we have a tendency to be idle. This is where you need the right manager and Capello is that manager. Brazil and Spain are the big two but we are now very much cemented in that following pack of sides just behind. That includes Holland, Italy, Germany, Argentina, Portugal but France and Portugal may not be there if they dont make it through the play-offs.
The draw is on 4th December and if we get a good one then I think you could just pencil in the last 8 for us as a minimum. Once we reach the quarters, this is when we have to stand up and put in three big performances back to back and we havnt done that in a long time but Capello will wield the axe and anyone who is not mentally on it will be out.
We can win this….chances are that we wont as seven other countries will all be saying the same. But we dont have to beat them all. If we get to the last 8 then its three wins from the cup……cant wait for next June to arrive….dont know how I am going to get my bloody work done
