Are you short??

I still havent played anymore poker since my 17k loss except for some low stakes limit holdem on Cake Poker in preparation for my bankroll challenge. I am over the loss now, actually this kind of reminds me that after all these years I still cannot shrug off the pain of losses…..its something that has never left me.

I guess that too many years of struggling financially has left me mentally scarred and those scars may be impossible to heal. This is certainly the reason why I have never played higher than 25-50 at NLHE. I have played 150-300 limit but only when the games were exceptionally good.

Onto todays question then from Robert who asks how important having a big stack is in NLHE??

A…… It all depends on your level of skill and the level of skill of your opposition. I have often said that NLHE is fundamentally flawed in certain aspects. This is because it is possible for a novice player to almost totally eliminate a good players edge just by doing two things……buying in for the minimum and then using a decent short stack strategy.

If you can play a deep stack well (100BB+) and several of your opponents cannot play deep stacks well then your best bet is to play deep yourself. But I have heard many experienced players state how a good player should always buy in deep and this is bad advice. In fact these players are basically showing how they dont understand poker.

I know some world class players who like to buy-in short. But if you lack discipline or experience and you want to try NLHE then you want to start off playing a short stack and then look to expand from there. It is exactly the same with PLO as well.

So the answer is that it all depends on your skill level and the skill level of your opponents.

Been getting some very interesting readings from our Poker Office 5 software recently. It would appear that I have a terrible leak in a certain situation. Not going to divulge what it is but its a big one and something that I never even realised that I had. But this software is absolutely brilliant and it seems strange now being without it. Now I just need to find some software that can prevent me from making stupid plays and taking bad beats.

See ya soon
