I played in the 100k guaranteed event on Cake Poker last night, nothing good to report as I was knocked out after just over an hour and a half. The prize money was 127k and 845 players participated.
After a couple of my early steals got picked off I managed to get my stack to around 7500 but the blinds escalate so fast that you dont hardly have any time for breath. I have spotted what I think are a few flaws in how I have been playing and this sadly is also how I have been advised to play.
My instincts tell me that I am playing too tight for the structure and that is not a recipe for success in fast paced online tournaments. By the time that the blinds reach the 200-400 level then the average stack is about no more than 25BB and this is certainly on the short side. Then with the blinds about to hit 300-600 and 400-800 then you simply dont have the time to hit strong hands.
Also the desperation of the other stacks makes stealing very difficult as many players are going all in and making big raises relative to your stack size at that stage. But I think that you definitely need to speed up at the beginning of these tournaments and come out of the blocks flying and if that means getting knocked out then so be it but at least you wont get to the two hour point crippled by a combination of escalating blinds and ultra aggressive all in moves.
This Sunday will be the 250k and guess what??? I expect to get knocked out during the first thirty minutes and if I dont then I may just have a stack big enough to actually do something with.
