Anyone who has been reading my blog lately will be aware of the fact that I am at something of a crossroads with regards my poker playing career. My poker playing income has dropped off alarmingly of late and I only have myself to blame although I won over $20k last week ay NLHE 25-50 and PLO 5-10…it has still been a bad year and my worst for a while.
I easily have the ability to earn 100k a year multi-tabing at low stakes but I know that this is like watching paint dry and discipline would be a problem. The 100k challenge last year turned into a nightmare even though I was earning money.
Just goes to show that I cannot hack it at low stakes ring games, even when I win then it is still getting to me. I could make a few bucks whacking the lower SNG’s between the $20-$50 level but the levels that I used to play at between $100 and $200 have got seriously tough now with most players shark scoping everybody and using ICM as well as good strategies so the edge (if any) is minimal.
I was doing some calculations today with regards my earn rate at NLHE 25-50 and it has dropped substantially. Luckily I know the reason, the games have toughened and I havent been as selective as I used to be and I seriously need to be picking and choosing my games now based on who is in them.
The problem is that I need to spend more time ghosting the cash games and I havent been doing so simply because I dont have the time, well if I aspire to beat this game then I better start making the god damned time. When I see the number of hours that top players put in in the high-stakes games, it is very low.
This means that game selection is very high on their list. I need to spend more time building files up on the players and less time playing and if this means only playing 10-15 hours a month then so be it…….its the price of success these days.
