Todays blog entry is a question from reader Paul Davis who has asked me if limit holdem is still a viable way to make money in online poker?
A……the answer is as it always is with my answers…..it depends. If you have the skills and the knowledge then yes you can certainly make money playing limit…..I wouldnt be undertaking this challenge at limit holdem if that was not the case.
But the face of limit has changed, gone are the passive multi-way pots that you used to get years ago where the players were bad and you could get by simply using card dependent strategies and not much else. The average pots are smaller so this means that you need to create value without waiting for it to come to you. This means increasing the variance which then means a bigger bankroll.
You really have to push marginal edges now and get full value for your hand. Rakeback is critical to success at the lower levels but you really need to concentrate on extracting those extra bets and saving bets wherever possible because this is your earn rate. It is said and I have said it that limit is better for players who are multi-tabling. You dont have to worry about bet sizing like you do with NLHE and you can play a more automatic game.
But the flip side to doing this is when the quality of players improve and earning and saving bets becomes tougher and more important. Personally (and this is only me), I would much rather play 1 or 2 tables now at limit than multi-table them and especially at six handed play. I am confident on beating any table at limit upto 30-60 without having to table select too hard when I am just single tabling.
But you have to have very strong post flop play in limit holdem because you see so many flops. So the answer is…..yes you can definitely still make money in limit holdem but not playing the way that the theory books were advising ten or so years ago.
