Last night for the very first time I had a long discussion with my poker partner and backer about some of the players in my 25-50 games. This was actually the first time that we had contacted each other for ages that didnt involve an e-mail.
I know that many top online players work like this and discuss stuff with other good players. I have too in the past but only on a discussing how a hand was played type of thing. This goes much deeper than that. Last night we were cross referencing certain metrics to try and ascertain just how good a couple of the regulars really were.
We found several flaws in their games and this new Poker Office 5 software is really doing the business for us. The problem with the 25-50 games is that they are populated by very strong players. In fact they are so strong that they left me behind last year and was why I lost 100k. These guys on the whole are seriously good and are playing these levels simply because they either dont have the bankroll to play nosebleed games or they cant stomach the swings.
I mean, even Brian Townsend is playing this level now so thats just an indication of the quality (hope I dont bump into him). But Poker Office with the help of my partner has spotted flaws in my game too but these flaws are only apparent when you move up. But it is difficult to ascertain skill level with strong players just from VPIP, PFA and AF. You need to be cross referencing certain metrics to find out what a players MO really is.
I dont have my hand histories from last year so my partner cannot analyse them but they would have made gruesome reading I bet. So the upshot is that I think we have identified a couple of chinks int the armour of a couple of regulars. Finding value in these games is so damn difficult but that just shows what I was doing wrong last year…..I was playing when I should have been doing something else.
