Many people have asked me what the real secret is to winning at poker. Well I can tell you what it isnt. It isnt working your arse off for years by reading books and all the rest of it. If knowledge and hard work equalled success then I would have probably been inducted into the hall of fame by now alongside Johnny Moss and all the rest of those legends.
But poker when all said and done is a mental game and this is where I have not always measured up. I know that no ones perfect and it isnt possible to be on your “A” all the time but I cannot help thinking that I could have done a lot better, but having said that there probably isnt a poker player alive who hasnt said the same thing.
I also have a tendency to be idle as well and being physically idle can lead to mental idleness and there is no room in poker for mentally idle people. This is why I keep my playing sessions short and sweet now. Although I will have to seriously pull my finger out when I start playing poker tournaments but I am hoping that this will be different.
But I am certain that there are loads of players out there who have worked really hard on their game and who are still not making money despite knowing tons of stuff. This is why I have not gone down the road of having a backer like I did with blackjack despite currently having a very good offer on the table. I just feel that I wouldnt be comfortable knowing that I had to make phone calls to someone telling them about bad results and especially bad results that had been down to my bad play and indiscipline.
I now have an offer of £500,000 on the table or near as damn it a million dollars. But the types of games that this size bankroll would permit me to play at have some seriously good players in them and the overlays are not frequent so I wouldnt be playing as often. In fact because I wouldnt know anything about the players at those levels then I would have to spend a great deal of time doing preparation work beforehand and that would mean watching the games.
This would end up seriously impacting what I am doing and is why I havent gone down that road. If I didnt have any options then I probably would have done it like what happened with my blackjack backer but this is different. Anyway enjoy the rest of your weekend.
