Its hard to believe it but I am actually looking forward to playing in the 100K and 250K tournaments on Cake Poker starting next month. So what is the situation with regards my poker playing, well I havent been doing too much of it lately and it is ages since I last played limit hold’em at a serious level.
But I always go through stages like this where my interest drops off. It usually takes something new to energise and motivate me and I can finally begin to understand just why certain people get turned on by playing in poker tournaments. The thrill of chasing a big score is a great motivator and this is probably what I need at this stage in my career.
I think the buzz of going deep in a tournament will exceed anything that I have done with regards playing cash games so far. But my discipline had certainly been below the levels that it should be lately and I cannot put my finger on why.
But this is the key element for success in cash games or at least it is if you desire to be successful. This is why it is sheer folly to think that a good player always remains a good player because they dont. It takes a certain type of player to succeed in cash games and sometimes I think that I have played one too many ring games and my mindset has somehow become affected in some way.
I mentioned in a previous post about Brian Townsend using other accounts whilst playing online and the scandal that it has caused. Well it is hardly any surprise to me as most top professional players take great lengths to conceal their ID. Unless they have financial incentives to reveal who they are then no good can possibly come from being known. I know that the tables with the red Full Tilt pro’s on always attract huge waiting lists but that doesnt always mean that the games are good.
Personally I just cannot see how it can help a player to advertise their ability beforehand to all and sundry. But anyway, I can certainly see me playing tournament poker full time next year and that really would make it a very strange world indeed if that happened.
