Played two sessions last night in the 25-50 game about an hour apart totalling about two and a half hours and lost $5600. Second hand in and I get KK, player to my right opens for $175 and I pop it to $550, it gets folded around to him and he only had $800 on the table, he thinks for ages and then moves in for his remaining $625. This led me to think that my kings were good but he had AA……I will give him the benefit of the doubt and pretend that he was distracted but he sure as hell wasnt multi-tabling.
Anyway, eight hundred down after two hands and I re-load. Only ten minutes later I get the 10c-9c on the button and I call the raise of a very tight (chronically low VPIP even for FR). I think that I can move this rock from his hand post flop as even if he has a big pair, there are plenty of boards that will scare the living daylights out of him.
Our analysis on this guy is that he simply will not play big pots without the nuts or close to it. Blinds fold and there is $425 in the pot and he is sitting on about $6k and I have around $5k. Flop comes Jc-7d-3d giving me a gutshot draw. He bets $250 and I float him making a $925 pot. I have two main ways to win this hand, he can check-fold the turn or I can make my draw which isnt my main plan.
The board is going to look threatening to him if another diamond comes as well which could give me extra “outs”. The turn card is the 8h filling my straight and he bets out again only this time he makes it $700. My straight is wonderfully concealed and I decide to call again. The pot is now $2325 and the river card pairs the three (3h) which is not good for me as it devalues my straight. They bet $1400 and alarm bells start ringing and I just call and he shows Jh-Js for a full house……another $2500 gone west.
Nothing really happened except just bad luck, although many strong players would argue that I created my own bad luck here by calling a raise with a 10-9s. Just for clarity, I dont always do this, it is simply a balancing play as part of my overall strategy……last night I got burned doing it. Now for todays question of the day from Neil.
Q What form of poker is the most profitable to play online at the moment
That really depends on the individual and their own particular skill sets. I play full-ring NLHE because I really do feel that it fits my personality at this time. But at different stages of my career I have played PLO, Limit Holdem and SNG’s. PLO will be the new holdem and is fast becoming the game with the most value for the best players and in fact that time has already arrived. People say that holdem is dead but dont be fooled…..its not dead just tougher.
Low stakes SNG’s are also a good way to build a bankroll and especially these new DOUBLE YOUR MONEY variations that are on CAKE POKER!
Nearly forgot, will definitely be undertaking my “Chris Ferguson” style bankroll challenge this summer so watch out for that. I call it “Chris Ferguson style” because I wont be starting for $0….I could never be THAT disciplined. May start from $1000 and call it the 100k challenge or something like that…..anyway…..watch out for it.
See ya soon
